Angel Art USMC

Angel Carter, USMC, is nothing short of an inspiration to us here at VetStarts. She is always upbeat even on the days that she's really not and always exudes positivity and love to everyone who crosses her path.

On April 23, 2023, Jim Ross The Mayor of Arlington, proclaimed April 23rd to be "Angel Carter Day" in Arlington, TX. While she isn't painting... she is volunteering and creating opportunities to better her community full time. We love you Angel!

From the Artist:

"For many years I have experimented on my own with art.  It was not until I came to know the folks at VetStarts and got involved with their Warrior Art program that I was able to truly grow as an artist.  It is about more than crayons, markers, paint, pens, pencils, and other mediums.  It is about the process of healing that is part of the Warrior Art program.

Howdy!  I am Angel.  I am a Marine Corps veteran who served during Desert Shield / Desert Storm with VMFA ~ 212.  Most times I complete my paintings with signature handprint and the numbers 6531.  My job in the Marine Corps was as an Aviation Ordnance Technician and the 6531 was the designation of my MOS aka Military Occupational Specialty.

There is something therapeutic about smelling the paint.  Feeling the paint.  Seeing the creation as it develops and comes to being. To start with a general vision in my head of what it could be and watching it become what it will be.  Just as in life we make plans.  “The best laid plans of mice and men . . .”  I may go heavy with red only to have teal be in abundance. 

As much as I create my art for me, I also create it for others.  Without naming.  Without interpretation.  Without explaining what I see.  I prefer to let it stand on its own so that others can envision how it can be part of their lives, their homes, or a gift to someone they love. 

While I may have been the vessel used to create the artwork, I know that most is meant to brighten the lives of others.  Just as being part of VetStarts, Warrior Art and creating art has brightened my life.  I hope to not only share the artwork but hope that it helps raise awareness of all the amazing things happening at VetStarts as they have certainly been a blessing in my healing, life, and therapy."
